DIET FOR DIARRHEA

Water, slightly sweetened with table sugar

Chamomile tea (Mazanilla tea), slightly sweetened with table sugar

Clear broth

Pedialyte “pops”

For the first few hours or day of treatment, you should rely ONLY on the above liquids. DO NOT OFFER MILK OR MILK PRODUCTS AT ANY TIME! THIS INCLUDES BREAST MILK, IF YOU ARE NURSING. After the first four or five hours, if the diarrhea has lessened and if the child appears to be hungry or is crying for food, you may add small amounts of the following foods, appropriate for age, and feed him/her 5 to 6 times a day:

Cream of  rice or wheat   Soda crackers
Clear soups  Cooked rice
Raw ripe bananas Applesauce
Raw peeled apples Jello / Jello water

DO NOT USE APPLE JUICE, CITRUS JUICES OR NECTARS!

DO NOT GIVE YOUR CHILD PEPTO-BISMOL!

(In some cases, and only as directed by the doctor or the staff,
you may introduce milk feedings after 24 hours if the above has been tried.)
